XM vs FBS: Accounts, Costs, Platforms and Bonuses
XM or FBS? Compare deposit minimums, account choices, trading costs and bonus terms, with a practical checklist for choosing your first account.
Published · Facts verified

XM vs FBS is not a simple low-deposit contest. Both advertise a $5 starting point, both support MetaTrader, and both publish deposit-promotion information. What matters next is the account you can open and what it costs to place your trades.
This guide compares published terms, not first-hand execution tests. It focuses on the questions worth answering before you fund an account: which plan, which costs, which platform and which payment route?
XM vs FBS minimum deposit: $5 is only the starting point
XM lists $5 on commonly offered CFD accounts. FBS also advertises an initial deposit from $5, while its help guidance notes that payment-system limits can differ. These are entry thresholds, not promises that $5 will cover the trade you want to place.
Think of three separate checks. First, does the payment meet the account minimum? Second, does it meet the payment provider's minimum? Third, will the credited balance cover your order's margin with room for price changes?
A deposit can pass the first two checks and still leave an order too large to open. That is not solved by picking the broker with the smaller-looking number. You need to check the contract size and volume of the trade itself.
If you pay in ringgit or Singapore dollars, a US-dollar minimum also needs converting. The exchange rate and any payment-provider charge affect what leaves your bank. Our XM minimum-deposit guide breaks down that difference.
Account types: compare today's menu, not an old review
XM's global account menu presents Standard and Ultra Low, while other regional versions can show different choices, including Zero. The account page served during a visit is not proof of what every resident can open.
FBS's published bonus terms mention Standard and Cent accounts. That does not establish that both are available to every new customer. Use the current registration menu rather than treating a historic list of account names as today's offer.
For XM, start with our account-types breakdown. Then compare the actual account offered against FBS using these four fields:
- Contract size: how much of the underlying instrument one lot represents.
- Minimum order: the smallest volume you can place on that symbol.
- Cost model: spread, commission and overnight charges.
- Promotion access: whether that specific account qualifies.
Do not compare a cent-denominated balance with a dollar balance by looking at the number alone. And do not assume a Micro label at one broker means the same contract size as a Cent label at another. Read the symbol specification.
XM Ultra Low vs FBS: compare the whole trading cost
FBS advertises floating spreads from 0.7 pips and no trading commission on its published conditions page. XM's cost model depends on the account you select. Neither a minimum spread nor an account name tells you which will be cheaper on your next order.
For a trade opened and closed the same day, start with spread cost plus any opening and closing commission. If you hold overnight, add the applicable overnight charge or credit. The XM fees guide explains these components separately.
A worked example using made-up quotes
Suppose your position is worth US$1 per pip. Account A shows a 1.1-pip spread and no commission, so the estimated spread cost is US$1.10. Account B shows 0.5 pips plus US$0.80 total commission for opening and closing. Its estimated cost is US$1.30.
Account B has the smaller spread but the larger total in this example. These are fictional figures, not measured XM or FBS prices. The point is to compare the final amount, not one line of the price schedule.
For a useful comparison, record the same currency pair at roughly the same time and with equal exposure. Check more than one quote if you trade in different sessions. For gold, use the contract specification rather than carrying over a forex pip value.
Slippage can also change the result. A displayed price is not a guarantee of the final fill, especially during fast markets. This comparison does not award either broker an execution-speed win without comparable live tests.
XM vs FBS bonuses: compare the rules, not just the percentage
XM offers deposit promotions subject to regional eligibility. FBS also publishes a deposit-bonus programme. It would be misleading to present bonuses as something only XM provides.
For either offer, separate the cash you deposit from promotional trading credit. Credit can support margin, but it is not the same as withdrawable cash. An offer can also have rules about eligible accounts, deposits, cancellation and withdrawals.
Before accepting, find clear answers to three questions:
- Does the promotion apply to my country and this account?
- What happens to the credit if I withdraw or transfer funds?
- What conditions apply to withdrawing eligible profits?
A larger credit amount does not compensate for a trade that is too large for your cash balance. For XM's approach, read our deposit-bonus explanation and compare it with the offer actually displayed in your account.
MT4 or MT5: the broker and platform are separate choices
Both brokers provide MT4 and MT5 access. That means the platform name alone is unlikely to settle XM vs FBS. Your choice of broker still controls the account credentials, server and available trading conditions.
Already using an MT4 indicator or Expert Advisor? Check that it works on your intended setup before moving. Choosing MT5 is not a shortcut to making an MT4 tool compatible. Our MT4 vs MT5 guide covers that choice.
If you move from FBS to XM, treat it as a new account setup. You cannot log in to an XM server with FBS credentials, and open positions do not move with you. Save any settings you need, confirm the new symbol names and test order entry on demo.
Deposits and withdrawals: use your own country and currency
For readers in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia, the first check is whether the provider can serve your residence under the applicable rules. A translated page or familiar payment logo is not proof of local authorisation.
Read the company named in the application and its terms. Do not assume a licence held by another company in a broker group applies to your account.
Next, compare the payment route you would actually use. Write down the amount sent, the currency credited, any conversion charge and the withdrawal route. A broad claim about fast processing is less useful than the conditions for your particular bank or wallet.
For practical XM examples, see deposit methods in Malaysia and SGD funding costs in Singapore. The options shown inside your verified account are the ones to confirm before sending money.
Which one should you explore first?
If you are new to both, XM is a sensible place to compare account plans and learn MetaTrader with a demo. Pick one instrument you understand and work out the cost of one small order. That gives you something concrete to compare with FBS.
If you already use FBS, identify what you want to improve first. Is it the cost of your usual symbol, the account choice or the funding process? Check whether the XM option solves that specific issue before moving money.

XM vs FBS FAQ
Is XM better than FBS for beginners?
XM is worth exploring if you want to compare its account options before funding. FBS also offers a low advertised entry point and MetaTrader access. For a first account, choose based on the smallest suitable order, total cost and payment route available to you, rather than the broker name alone.
Which has a lower minimum deposit, XM or FBS?
Both advertise a $5 starting point for commonly offered CFD trading accounts. Your selected account, payment method and currency can change the amount you need to send. Neither has a clear universal advantage from that headline alone.
Does FBS offer a deposit bonus like XM?
FBS publishes deposit-bonus terms, so it is not accurate to say only XM has bonuses. Compare the active offers shown to your account. Bonus credit is not withdrawable cash, and each provider has its own eligibility and withdrawal conditions.
Is XM Ultra Low cheaper than FBS?
You need a like-for-like quote to answer that. Compare the same instrument, exposure and holding period, including commission and overnight charges. A published minimum spread is not an average price or a guarantee.
Can I move my FBS account to XM?
You would open a separate XM account, if eligible. Your FBS login, balance and open trades do not automatically transfer. Check any tools or indicators on the new account before using them with live funds.
Final verdict
Start with XM if its available account plan matches how you want to trade. Compare Standard and Ultra Low where offered, inspect the instruments you need, and try the controls on demo before funding.
FBS remains a reasonable comparison point, particularly if you already know its platform setup. There is no need to switch simply because a promotion looks bigger. A move makes more sense when the new account solves a specific cost, platform or funding problem.
